UNT engages San Antonio alumni

San Antonio showed its Mean Green pride at a UNT alumni happy hour April 18 at the Lion and Rose. About 30 UNT alumni and friends came together to visit and reminisce during the event, which is part of the university’s ongoing effort to reach out to more alumni across the state.

“The San Antonio area is home to nearly 4,000 UNT alumni whose professional successes and talents can help us stand out among the state’s institutions,” said Stan Walker, UNT assistant vice president for fund development. “We want them to know that their connection to UNT doesn’t have to end when they leave our campus.”

The Division of Advancement and the UNT Alumni Association have made statewide outreach a priority, hosting events recently in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin and Houston in addition to the San Antonio happy hour. The goal is to engage more alumni, with an emphasis on those under age 40, and build Mean Green spirit outside of the Dallas-Fort Worth region, Walker said.

Jay McAnelly (’94) led the San Antonio happy hour. He said he’s looking forward to UNT’s increased presence in the region, especially as the university moves into Conference USA this fall. The move will see the Mean Green face the University of Texas at San Antonio.

McAnelly said he would help with future efforts to gather South Texas UNT alumni, as did other attendees at the April 18 event. Carlos Nava (’87) said meeting with other UNT alumni helped build a sense of belonging and pride in their alma mater, even though they’re far from campus. “Having an alumni event here in San Antonio is like a homecoming,” he said.

UNT alumni will have additional opportunities for mingling and networking from

• 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Cool River Café in Las Colinas

• 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at The Woodshed Smokehouse in Fort Worth
